Baby Gifts Tips:

Lesson 1

Day 1 – Babies and Parents

Welcome to the Baby Gift Tips Mini Course! In this course, we will talk about baby gifts, and… well… baby gifts! It’s all about the babies in this course, and the best possible gifts you can give them. This course will give you some tips on how to make your gifts for the babies really special, and how ordinary gifts can still make a difference.

First off is one of the most overlooked aspects of baby gift-giving: the parents. Most times, when we give gifts, we just think about the baby and the baby alone. We tend to forget the parents. Why should we care about the parents? The answer is simple. Parents will be a strong influence on how the baby grows up. What the parents’ likes and dislikes will most likely be passed on to the kid.

This is especially helpful if you are giving the kind of gifts that the kid can use for a long time. What do I mean by that? Again, it’s simple. One of the better ways to give gifts is to give keepsakes. Most of the time, we give the baby clothes and other things that can be outgrown. This doesn’t have to be the case.

When we give babies their gifts, it’s important to take the parents into consideration. Why? First off, the parents will decide first if they like the gift. If they like it, they will allow the baby to have it. If they don’t, they’ll just throw it away. This seems ruthless, but is one of the best kept secrets in the fate of baby gifts.

You don’t believe me? Ask yourself this: how often do you see the baby wearing clothes that you gave? If the parents like it, they often dress their baby with it. If not, you don’t really get to see it that much.

So here’s the deal. Know the parents good enough, and you can draw out an idea from there. Do the parents listen to heavy metal music? If so, then you can give the baby a shirt printed with the parents’ favorite bands. The parents will love it, and will dress their baby up with it frequently.

Are the parents fond of video games? Think of a good classic video game that you can give for the kid to play when he grows up. Either that or you can buy cheap handhelds to prep the baby up for his or her video game years with which the kid can bond with the parents. As you can see, thinking of the parents when you think of gifts to give the baby doesn’t simply mean pleasing them. It is one way of connecting the kid with the parents, so to speak.

We started simple, and we are going to progress into the real meat of baby gift tips. In the next course, we will continue with a few basics and talk about picking a gift that’s cheap, but remains a decent gift. I’ll see you there!

Lesson 2

Day 2 – The Color of Gender

Welcome to the second day of Baby Gifts Tips Mini Course! Previously, we talked about how you should include the parents into the equation of picking a baby gift. Today, we’re going to focus a little more on the baby, and the basics start with the baby’s gender and the appropriate types of gifts.

It’s a no-brainer, really. You can always give boys some action figures while you give girls dolls. Simple, right? Not really. You can’t really give little boys action figures because babies put anything and everything into their mouths. This is one rule that you should never forget: do NOT give a gift small enough for the baby to choke on.

When the baby is just a few months old, the best gift you can give would be clothes. Since babies grow too fast in their early years, you can’t spend too much time thinking about the best designs for baby clothes. Simply base your gifts on the gender of the baby, and pick a color that matches.

The usual colors would be blue for boys and pink for girls. With the advent of the Powerpuff Girls, however, blue can also be for girls – especially if you pronounce “blue” the same way your gay friend does (I’m not being a homophobe here, I actually have plenty of gay friends. Nevertheless, that was a bad joke).

There are colors in the light spectrum that can be for girls and boys alike. Orange, yellow, and green are unisex colors. Brown is also a unisex color, and so is grey. If you’re simply giving plain shirts, the colors won’t really matter; but the designs and prints on the shirts would.

Since we’re in the topic of unisex, you may also give out unisex gifts. Stuffed toys or pillows of Spongebob Squarepants would be appropriate for babies of either gender. If you’re giving out clothes, at least the unisex clothes would still be usable for the parent’s next child – if they are planning more.

Unisex gifts can be a cheaper option for you, and it could also make the parent’s lives easier. Why? Because unisex gifts are often the items that are essential to parents in their role of taking care of and bringing up a child.

Unisex gifts can also mean other important things, like blankets, cribs, mobiles, and others of the same nature. You don’t have to keep telling yourself that you need to find a specifically-colored gift. You can simply give items that don’t gear towards a specific gender.

In the next course, we’ll start with the basics of the basics in giving baby gifts – clothes. I’ll see you there!

Lesson 3

Day 3 – Textile and Texture

Welcome to day three of the Baby Gifts Tips Mini Course! We previously talked about unisex gifts and how colors play a role in it. When you say unisex, however, it almost always pertains to clothes and apparel. So in this course, we will talk about baby clothes, and a few things that you should keep in mind.

First off, consider the age of the baby. Babies aged under a year grow really fast. This rapid growth may start diminishing once they turn four or five. Before then, they easily outgrow the clothes that they have. With that said, you may want to wait on giving really stylish clothes to the baby, since your gifts will probably be unusable in just a few months.

Another thing that you will want to keep in mind is that baby skin is very sensitive. You will not want to irritate the baby’s skin, so try to find clothes that are woven purely out of cotton. Anything else may give the baby nasty rashes or even make the baby feel too hot and uncomfortable.

When choosing baby clothes, try to choose thin and smooth fabrics. You won’t want the baby to feel hot. If you are giving winter clothes, make sure the fabric will be as comfortable as possible for the kid.

One good way to give baby clothes would be to do so in sets. If you’re giving baby clothes, don’t just give a shirt or two. You can give at least five shirts, or throw in a few pairs of socks, underwear, beddings, hats, and scarves for added measure. This won’t cost you much, since you won’t have to pick the really stylish ones anyway.

Unisex clothes make great gifts since parents can reuse them for their future kids. They’re also good since they’re cheap, especially if the clothes are for babies under a year old. It’s also good for you since you won’t have to take too much time choosing a girly-girly or a boyish gift for the baby.

The best thing about clothes is that they are the easiest to personalize and the market has a plethora of baby clothes for sale so there are unlimited options, really, when it comes to clothes and apparel.

In the next few courses, we will be starting to talk about using themes in thinking of a baby gift, starting with the most common thing that babies learn to love first – the television.

Lesson 4

Day 4 – Eye Candy for Babies

Welcome to the fourth day of the Baby Gifts Tips Mini Course! In the first few courses, we laid the groundwork for giving baby gifts. In the next few courses, starting from this one, I’ll provide some tips that will help you in giving the best gift that you could every give. Today, we will draw some ideas from America’s REAL favorite pastime – the TV.

What do you get when you mix TV and babies? Kiddie shows! What would be the most popular form of kiddie shows? That’s right: cartoons and animation.

The first visual feast that babies enjoy – or get scared of – is their parents making faces in front of them. The second thing that they learn to love watching is cartoons. It is almost customary, an unwritten rule if you will, for parents to introduce their babies to the wonderful world of Disney (always wanted to say that), or any other cartoon.

With enough exposure to cartoons, the baby will start to grow fond of particular ones. Parents will notice that first, so you can simply ask them. If you don’t want to spoil the surprise for the parents either, then just strike up a casual conversation with them and slowly inch the conversation towards the baby’s favorite cartoon.

I’ve mentioned this in one of the past courses, but the one of the most popular cartoon character these days would be Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants. I mean, the baby couldn’t possibly resist enjoying that somewhat of an annoying laugh of the yellow-colored character.

Some parents would rather introduce their babies to Disney cartoons for the sole reason that the stories usually have some moral lesson. Other than that, Disney stories are the type that parents read to their children during bedtime. If it’s not Disney, it’s usually the 3D animations by Pixar like Toy Story, for instance.

Now that you have a theme, you can use that in your search for the perfect baby gift. The most common would be shirts and apparel that have the cartoon characters printed on them. Blankets and beddings would complete the “package” if you want to give away a whole set.

You may also give other items fashioned in the image of the cartoon. Overhead mobiles, for instance, will keep the baby enjoyed while he or she is in the crib. Square pillows with Spongebob’s face on it will do as well.

The next course will talk about another common theme that you can draw ideas from when looking for that perfect baby gift. This theme has something to do with a specific event that most parents arrange for their kids. I’ll see you there!

Lesson 5

Day 5 – Christening Gifts

Welcome to the fifth day of the Baby Gifts Tips Mini Course! In the previous email, we talked about picking a theme out of something that a baby naturally does when he or she starts gaining vision – watching cartoons. Today, we will be focusing on something that a child typically undergoes during the early years – an event called christening.

Christening is the little ceremony held in the church to welcome the baby into the life of Christianity. Now, even if you are not a Christian, there will always be a significant other in your life that is – a friend, perhaps, or a relative. It is a Christian custom to baptize a child and pave the way towards a Christian life.

Notice that I used the word “Christian” too many times there. You know why? Christianity is the theme of the whole thing. Now that you have a theme, you can cook up some ideas of what gifts to give that are relevant to the theme. Sure, you can always go for the good old shirts and apparel route, but it would be much better if you give a themed gift – one that goes along with the occasion.

The most common gift would be a holy bible. However, most guests would probably be thinking of giving a bible, so if you join the bandwagon, the baby may end up with tons of bibles. In contrast, most people would be thinking it and will avoid giving a bible, so if you feel that way, go ahead and buy the holy book.

If you’re taking the risk of giving a gift similar to what others give, then at least attempt to separate your gift from the rest. One way of doing is this personalizing the bible. If you can draw, then you can sketch the baby’s face on the first blank pages. If you have a talent for lettering, write the baby’s name with a small dedication to boot.

Other gifts may include crucifix necklaces, which you should absolutely NOT give to a baby under a year old. You may also give out pendants or lockets. One good idea of a locket is a picture of Christ on one side and the picture of the baby on the other. If you can, you may also create a pendant of a holy water vial.

See how easy it is? All you have to do is keep the theme in mind and you can draw up countless ideas for gifts. With christening gifts, you may notice that most of them aren’t really temporary. This proves the value of themed gifts. Most of them can be used as keepsakes, which is what we will be discussing in the next course. I’ll see you there!
